This paper was presented at the PUARL Conference in Portland Oregon in 2009. It suggests that pattern languages could provide critical support for the conceptual course corrections that we need to forestall the potentially catastrophic problems that humankind now faces. To build this case I discuss why pattern languages have strong potential for advancing our civic intelligence, the steps that we are taking with the Liberating Voices project to help realize that potential, and some general thoughts and suggestions for moving significantly forward.
