Juvenile Justice / Community Involvement

Saturday we departed from class around 12:30 and headed to Green Hill for the annual Unity Pow Wow in celebration of Mother Earth. The Pow Wow was a melting pot of culturally diverse people of the community coming together to enjoy each others company. It was truly a good example of civic intelligence. As a result of the cooperative work between us Greeners and  the students of Green Hill we were able to collaboratively make enough gifts for all in attendance of the Pow Wow.  It great joy to see these young men get to let down their guard for a day and be the kids they hardly get to be in a sometimes harsh environment. They were able to laugh, sing, dance, and feel like an important member of the community. It was a day to be recognized for the good they bring and not judged for the mistakes they've made in their troubled past. Some of the boys were accompanied by family and friends, those that didn't have family or friends in attendance were still able to feel a sense of family and unity with those of the native community and supporting staff. It amazed me to see a more gentler side of these young men when they felt important and part of a true community.
