Bien que les maux du passé continuent de nous hanter au présent, la société est souvent incapable ou refuse de traiter avec l'injustice historique. La fonction de la mémoire et de la responsabilité est de favoriser la guérison afin d'étudier l'histoire pour éviter des problèmes futurs. L'intention n'est de ne pas blâmer ni de sanctionner mais d'encourager les gens à réfléchir ensemble et d'œuvrer pour la réconciliation.
