Indigenous Environmentalism
Pattern number within this pattern set:
716
Justin Smith
The Public Sphere Project & St. Mary's University
Problem:
Resource management initiatives can often alienate groups, particularly those who reside within the geographic proximity of these management projects. Headed up by outside experts, these programs primarily side with corporate business needs ignoring the lived reality of the indigenous peoples of the area.
Context:
Local needs and understandings of shared resources can make indigenous peoples particularly well equipped (and knowledgeable) resource managers, as their very livelihoods are dependent upon their capacity to effectively use and protect the natural environment that sustains them
